For Catoosa High School junior Sydnee McClure, representing her school is more than wearing a uniform or attending an event. Whether she is competing on the volleyball court or taking part in an FFA speech contest, McClure carries pride in both her school and community.
“It means everything to me. Whether it’s on the volleyball court or it’s going to a speech contest, I’m proud to be able to wear Catoosa on my back,” McClure said.
McClure is active in several areas of Catoosa FFA. She serves on the chapter’s officer team while also competing in speech contests, career development events, and leadership development events. Her involvement gives her opportunities to build leadership skills, meet new people, and contribute to the direction of the chapter throughout the school year.
“I’m a part of the officer team for our chapter. I also participate in speech contests, career development events, and leadership development events,” McClure said.
Her decision to join FFA began with the example set by the people around her. Seeing her friends enjoy their experiences in the organization encouraged McClure to become involved herself.
“What helped me decide to join FFA was seeing all my friends have so much fun being involved with it,” McClure said.
Since joining, McClure has made memories that extend beyond competition and school activities. One of her favorite moments came during the chapter’s officer retreat, where she and her fellow officers were able to spend time together while preparing for the year ahead.
“My favorite memory is definitely going on our officer retreat with my friends. It was so much fun hanging out with everyone, but also being productive and planning out our school year,” McClure said.
Outside of FFA, McClure plays volleyball for Catoosa. Balancing athletics, academic responsibilities, and agricultural education activities requires focus, but she finds motivation in the people closest to her.
“My biggest motivation is my family. They are my biggest motivation because I want to make them proud and give back to the people who have always supported me,” McClure said.
Her grandfather is one of her strongest influences, providing an example of perseverance and support through difficult circumstances.
“My biggest influence is my grandpa because, through all the hardships he has faced, he still provides for his family and is always someone I can talk to,” McClure said.
McClure also credits English teacher Ms. Coppedge with making a lasting impact since middle school. Through encouragement and support, McClure said her teacher has helped her recognize her own potential.
“The teacher who has impacted my life the most is my English teacher, Ms. Coppedge. Ms Coppedge has been there for me since my 8th-grade year. She pushes me to do my best I can because she knows I’m capable of doing it. Whenever I feel upset about anything, I go to her, and she listens no matter what,” McClure said.
