High school students have a number of people in their lives that help them grow and become better people. Jeremiah Martinez, a member of the Catoosa High School band, says that one of his teachers had the biggest impact on his life and helped him to become who he is today.
“Mathew Schepers is the best teacher I’ve ever had in my life,” he said. “He is also one of the best mentors I’ve had as well. He’s taught me more than just music; he’s also taught me life lessons that can go on for the rest of my life. Mr. Schepers has been there if I’ve had any troubles and even with times of darkness he was there to help me out.”
Martinez is a senior at Catoosa and has been a part of the band since he was in the sixth grade. Away from band, he plays varsity soccer, is a member of the student council, and is running for Activities Coordinator for his senior class.
Along with his former band director, Jeremiah says that there is someone he is close to that has been in his corner since day one.
“My biggest role model in my life has been my mother, Juana Mar,” he said. “She has been a big part of my life and has molded me into the young man I am and will become. She is such a kind and strong woman with so much love that I really strive to be like.”
While he enjoys being a part of the band, Martinez says that it takes a lot in order to be at his best when they step out for a performance.
“I would say the main thing is making sure you are solid with yourself as in musically and mentally,” Jeremiah said. “Also making sure you are able to take critique and be coachable. You need to do what is said and get it done.”
Throughout his career, Jeremiah has made a lot of great memories, but he says that there is one that stands out as his favorite.
“A highlight of my time in band was when we competed at Oklahoma Bandmasters Association with the 2021-2022,” he said. “That was the year we placed seventh but it was honestly one of the best times I’ve had because all of my friends were there. It was a pretty stacked band and I really wish I could relive that season.”
