Student Spotlight with Catoosa’s Jordan Slocum – Presented by Tulsa Bone and Joint

Jordan Slocum, a junior at Catoosa High School, is beginning his second year in FFA. Through his time in the program, he has gained skills in leadership development, public speaking, and career preparation.  Jordan is eager to continue growing in these areas and looks forward to what new opportunities his chapter will bring this year.

Jordan was drawn to FFA because of his love for public speaking and connecting with new people. Before his school started a FFA chapter, his opportunities for public speaking were minimal. Once the chapter was established, his opportunities to compete in public speaking events and delivering speeches were endless. “FFA has helped me grow as a leader, and given me a chance to compete in something I’ve always loved,” he shares. Jordan also appreciates that ag has allowed him to meet new people around the state, being the extrovert he is, building countless friendships.

For Jordan, FFA has strengthened his public speaking skills and got him involved in many different agricultural projects. Through speaking opportunities, he has learned how to navigate through conversations, address a crowd, and deliver his message productively. He understands the importance of masking nerves and remaining confident. “FFA has taught me to step out of my comfort zone,” he shares. Beyond public speaking, Jordan is also proud of his supervised agricultural experience, a lawn care business he runs with his friend, mowing yards for several clients in the Tulsa Metro.

Jordan credits his friend Ta’Nei West for encouraging him to join agriculture, showing him that FFA is more than just showing animals. It’s an organization that provides opportunities for everyone.  He is grateful he joined, as it also introduced him to one of his favorite teachers, Ms. Hankins, his first ag teacher, who will always hold a special place in his heart. One of Jordan’s proudest moments came when he was chosen for the FFA chapter team. “It was one of the best feelings ever, I had a lot of emotions that day,” he recalls.

Looking ahead, Jordan advises, “If you’re nervous about joining FFA don’t be; I promise that it will help you grow as a person.” After high school, Jordan hopes to become a youth pastor, inspiring the youth of our world. “God is my number one priority and I believe wholeheartedly that I am called to serve God through pastoring, ” he shares. No matter where life takes him, Jordan will forever be thankful for the experiences and growth FFA has given him as a young adult.
