Jason Watkins knows that the work done in the trenches rarely brings the loudest cheers, but it often decides the outcome long before the final whistle. As a sophomore at Catoosa High School, Watkins embraces that responsibility every time he takes the field at left guard and defensive tackle.

Whether he is protecting the quarterback, clearing room for a ball carrier or fighting through blocks on defense, Watkins takes pride in improving each day. His motivation is simple and personal.

“Just always pushing myself to be a better football player.”

That mindset has helped Watkins understand what it takes to develop in a demanding sport. When asked what has been most important to his success, he offered one word: “Discipline.”

Watkins has found valuable guidance from coaches, teachers, and teammates who challenge him to raise his level. One of his biggest influences is Coach Sal, someone Watkins respects for both his character and his leadership.

“Coach Sal because he’s a great guy on and off the field and pushes us to do better.”

In the classroom, Mrs. Coppedge has made a lasting impression on Watkins by holding him accountable and encouraging him to reach a higher standard.

“Mrs. Coppedge because she pushes me to meet her expectations.”

His favorite moment so far came in a win over Inola, a matchup that carries extra meaning for Watkins and his teammates. He considers Inola the opponent he most enjoys defeating because of the rivalry between the programs.

“Inola because they’re our biggest rivals, but they’re also the only team we’ve beaten so far during my high school career.”

Practice is another place where Watkins continues to sharpen his game. He enjoys competing against teammate Coby Byrum, who plays the same positions and provides a daily challenge.

“Coby Byrum, because we play the same positions and push each other to be better.”

Watkins also values every person’s contribution to the team, saying, “Everyone has their own role; nobody is underappreciated.” Away from the field, he stays organized by focusing on priorities first: “I just do what needs to be done first.”

For Watkins, representing Catoosa goes beyond Friday nights. “It means a lot to know that I have past players watching and youth players learning.”
