A volleyball court demands quick decisions, steady communication, and the confidence to make a difference when the match is at its tightest. For Catoosa High School junior Jennifer De La Cruz, that responsibility as a middle hitter is part of what makes the sport meaningful.
De La Cruz is motivated by the people sharing the court with her.
“Knowing that I am not only playing for myself but also the girls around me,” De La Cruz said.
Her approach to volleyball centers on preparation, optimism, and belief in her own ability. While the extra work away from practice matters, she said her mindset has been just as important to her progress.
“Putting in extra work outside is a major part, but staying optimistic and never doubting my abilities is the most important part in my volleyball success,” De La Cruz said.
Whether she is putting up a block at the net or finishing a point with a kill, De La Cruz enjoys contributing in moments that can shift the momentum of a match.
“Getting a good block or kill is one of the best moments in my career,” De La Cruz said. “It feels great being able to contribute to my team, especially in tight games.”
Some of her favorite matchups come against Verdigris and Inola, opponents she respects because every contest brings intensity. In practice, she credits teammate Arianna White for helping create a competitive, upbeat environment.
“Arianna White because she always has a positive attitude, which encourages me to work hard even on tough days, while also being very competitive, making practicing with her very fun,” De La Cruz said.
She also appreciates Laura Bowen’s consistent encouragement and team-first attitude.
Away from volleyball, De La Cruz serves as vice president of both the Catoosa FFA Chapter and National Honor Society while participating in Student Council. She said communication with teachers and coaches helps her manage her commitments.
Her older brother, Erik De La Cruz, remains a major influence, while FFA advisors Mrs. Hankins and Ms. Mills have encouraged her through challenges. Representing Catoosa carries special meaning for De La Cruz.
“Being able to represent Catoosa gives me pride, and putting in the work and making the people around me proud is the best part,” De La Cruz said.
